Harold & Norma Elgas Scholarship Endowment
HAROLD & NORMA ELGAS SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT: ($500 scholarship) This scholarship, in the amount of $500, is awarded from the Harold and Norma A. Elgas fund through the Otsego County Community Foundation Education Committee.
Family and friends of Harold and Norma Elgas started the endowment for this scholarship in 1997 in celebration of their tremendous contributions to the growth and image of Gaylord. The Elgas family came to Gaylord in 1959 and their five daughters graduated from Gaylord High School. Harold Elgas was CEO of the Gaylord State Bank -- now Fifth Third Bank.
It was their belief that many worthy, young people are in need of financial assistance to pursue continuing education but are not eligible for academic scholarships due to their grade point averages. Therefore, this scholarship is not based on academic achievement. Rather, their goal is to reward a student for their integrity and moral character as demonstrated through their community involvement.
