What does a typical day look like for an aircraft mechanic? How much training does a dental hygienist need? What skills are required to become a respiratory therapist or a heavy equipment operator?
For many students, these questions can be difficult to answer. That's why the Otsego Career Access Network (OCAN) has invested in creating a growing library of Career Pathways videos featuring local professionals sharing honest, first-hand insights about their careers.
These videos are more than career spotlights. They are helping students explore possibilities, connect classroom learning to real-world opportunities, and make informed decisions about their futures.
One of OCAN's key goals is to increase educational attainment in Otsego County to 50% by 2030. When OCAN was launched, approximately 30% of working-age adults had earned education or training beyond high school. Today, that number has increased to 34%, demonstrating meaningful progress toward that community-wide goal. OCAN's Career Pathways videos are one of the many ways local partners are helping move the needle in the right direction by exposing students to careers, training pathways, and opportunities they may not have otherwise considered.
Each video features a local professional discussing their career journey, educational requirements, day-to-day responsibilities, and advice for those considering entering the field. By hearing directly from people who are doing the work, students gain a clearer understanding of what it takes to pursue a particular career and whether it might be the right fit for them.
Meet This Month's Featured Professionals
As we kick off this series, we'd like to introduce three professionals featured in OCAN's Career Pathways videos:
Houghton Robinson, Truck Driver
Houghton shares insights into his career as a truck driver and offers a firsthand look at the transportation industry.
Sara Lorenz, Pilot
Sara discusses her profession as a pilot, her career journey, and what makes aviation such a unique and rewarding field.
Amy Gildner, Surgical Technician
Amy shares insights into her profession and career journey, offering a firsthand perspective on working in the healthcare field.
These professionals represent just a small sample of the many career pathways highlighted through OCAN's video library. In the months ahead, we'll continue featuring additional videos and the local professionals behind them, helping students, families, and job seekers discover the many paths to a successful future.
Because sometimes seeing someone else's journey is the first step toward imagining your own.
