In November, we found ourselves doing something both bittersweet and deeply meaningful—saying “thank you” to James Camiller as he completed his service on the Otsego Community Foundation (OCF) Board of Directors. James joined the board in 2017 and quickly became Treasurer, later serving on the Finance Committee as well. His steady leadership, financial expertise, and genuine heart helped guide the OCF through some of its most transformative years.

When James first joined the board, the OCF was still in its humble beginnings—selling raffle tickets to keep the lights on was more truth than joke. At that time, the foundation held $4 million in assets and managed 60 funds. Today, as James wraps up his service, the OCF has grown to $14 million in assets and 105 funds. That kind of growth doesn’t happen by accident. James’ thoughtful stewardship played a major role in strengthening the OCF’s financial foundation and preparing it for long-term success.

James’ leadership truly shined during some of the most challenging moments our community has faced. He was at the table during the pandemic, the Gaylord tornado, and the devasting ice storm tragedy—times when emotions were high, needs were urgent, and clarity was essential. With calm presence and deep professional insight, James helped keep the focus firmly on what mattered most: supporting the people of Otsego County.

In 2023, James was surprised with the Kevin Reynolds Achievement Award, honoring a board member who goes above and beyond. The award presentation—delivered in the St. Mary School pickup line—perfectly captured James’ everyday reality: balancing work, family, community, and service all at once. His reaction, “What am I getting this for? I didn’t do anything to get this,” was classic James—humble, sincere, always focused on the mission rather than the spotlight.

Outside of OCF, James leads a wonderfully full life. He runs a busy CPA practice with two offices, is devoted to his wife Kari and their three children, keeps up with two dogs, and cherishes time traveling and relaxing at the lake. The fact that he generously shared his time, talent, and energy with the OCF—even with all he has going on—speaks volumes about his commitment to the place he has called home for 23 years.

James leaves behind a legacy of strength, stability, and heart. His financial leadership strengthened the OCF’s foundation. His perspective and commitment supported extraordinary organizational growth. And his quiet but meaningful contributions helped the OCF become more resilient and more prepared to meet the needs of Otsego County, whatever the future brings.

Thank you, James, for your integrity, your wisdom, your kindness, and your unwavering dedication to this community. Your impact will be felt for generations.
