Now, thanks to the extraordinary foresight of a dedicated group of supporters, the Mount Carmel Centre fund has been established through the Otsego Community Foundation to help provide a lasting legacy. The Mount Carmel Center Fund is a Designated Fund, created to provide ongoing, reliable support for the centre’s mission. A designated fund allows donors to permanently invest in the work of a nonprofit they value deeply. Each year, grants are distributed from the fund—based on requests made by the organization’s board—ensuring that its programs, services, and operations can continue to grow and thrive.
Preserving History, Inspiring the Future
The Mount Carmel Centre stands today because of the foresight and determination of a dedicated group of individuals who recognized its beauty and historical significance—and took action to ensure its survival.
In 1985, amid concerns that the building might be lost, the Mt. Carmel Historical Group was formed. This passionate group purchased the building and its grounds from the Diocese of Gaylord, preserving it for future generations and establishing what is now known as the Mount Carmel Centre.
Their efforts have not gone unnoticed. The centre has been designated a Michigan Historical Site and, since 2005, has been listed on the Michigan Register of Historic Buildings.
Today, the Mount Carmel Centre serves as a vibrant community hub, offering a space for arts, culture, and connection. From theatrical performances and musical events to art demonstrations, receptions, and community gatherings, the centre continues to bring people together in meaningful ways. The organization both hosts its own events and opens its doors for others to share in its unique setting.
Ongoing restoration efforts ensure that this 126-year-old landmark is preserved with care and intention. Proceeds from events and rentals are reinvested directly into maintaining and restoring the facility—supporting its long-term sustainability as a cherished nonprofit resource.
