At the Otsego Community Foundation, we see every day how small ideas can make a big difference. Adapt Grants are designed to support those moments—when an organization needs to respond quickly, try something new, or strengthen the work they’re already doing.
Adapt Grants provide flexible funding for projects that are typically smaller in scale but no less important. These grants help organizations meet unexpected needs, explore new opportunities, grow capacity, or bring ideas to life. While our Community Grant Program often focuses on larger “big rock” projects, Adapt Grants support the “pebbles”—the timely, responsive efforts that keep organizations moving forward. With awards ranging from $500 to $2,500, both types of grants play an important role in advancing a mission.
This quarter, we were inspired by the creativity and commitment shown by local organizations. From public safety to education and nonprofit sustainability, each application reflected a deep investment in the well-being of Otsego County.
This quarter’s Adapt Grant cycle brought forward a wide range of thoughtful ideas from organizations working to strengthen Otsego County in different ways. We extend our appreciation to:
- Gaylord Firefighters’ Association
- The Refuge Otsego County
- City of Gaylord
- Otsego County Economic Alliance
- Venture North Funding & Development
- Johannesburg-Lewiston Elementary & Middle School
Each proposal reflected a commitment to meeting needs, building capacity, and creating opportunities within our community.
Funded Projects
We are pleased to share that the following projects were funded through five different funds at the Otsego Community Foundation, demonstrating the power of partnership in supporting local priorities:
Gaylord Firefighters’ Association – Firefighter Training Facility ($2,500)
Supported by the Kohnert Family Fund* and the Disaster Response Fund*, this project enhances local and regional firefighter readiness by expanding access to hands-on, realistic training. With limited facilities in Northern Michigan, this investment allows firefighters to strengthen critical skills—improving safety, coordination, and emergency response when it matters most.
The Refuge Otsego County – Fundraising Capacity Building ($2,500)
Funded through the Ron Chavey Friendship Fund* and Funds for the Community*, this initiative strengthens The Refuge’s ability to sustain and grow its impact. By adding professional fundraising support and maximizing new technology, the organization can expand outreach, increase efficiency, and focus more time on serving individuals and families in need.
City of Gaylord – Parliamentary Procedure Training ($2,000)
Supported by Funds for the Community*, this three-hour training will equip elected and appointed officials across Otsego County with the tools to run more effective and organized meetings. With regular turnover on boards and commissions, the training provides both a strong foundation for new members and a refresher for experienced leaders—ensuring all participants have the confidence to contribute to thoughtful, effective decision-making.
Johannesburg-Lewiston Area Schools – Salmon in the Classroom ($1,500)
Funded by the U.A.W. Local 388 Educators Fund*, this hands-on learning experience connects students directly to Michigan’s natural resources. Students will raise salmon in their classroom and release them into local waters, learning about ecosystems, science, and environmental stewardship along the way.
Each of these projects reflects the importance of being able to adapt—taking action in the moment to meet needs, build capacity, and create new opportunities. While these grants may be modest in size, their impact reaches across our community in meaningful and lasting ways.
We are proud to support organizations as they continue to move their work forward—one thoughtful idea at a time.
