At the Otsego Community Foundation, our impact is made possible by a dedicated network of thoughtful, talented volunteers who lend their time, experience, and heart to strengthen our community. Each brings a unique perspective that helps us carry out our mission with intention and care. This month, we’re shining a light on Leslie Vendzuh, who has been an integral member of our Grant Committee for the past four years. Her steady commitment and insight have helped guide meaningful investments across Otsego County, and we are grateful for the expertise and compassion she brings to the table.

Get to know Leslie through her Q&A below.

1. Tell us a little about yourself. (What brought you to Otsego County? How long have you lived here? What do you do for work or fun? Any favorite hobbies, family traditions, or even a fun fact about you?)

I’ve had the pleasure of learning what it means to live “Up North” since the summer of 2018. Having been raised downstate, moving to Northern Michigan was a whole new experience, but one that has been positive and full of adventure. Through my work as a social worker, I have had the pleasure of meeting many children and families in our community, who I enjoy providing support and resources to, in order to ensure opportunities for success and stability. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family, traveling, going for walks, reading, visiting new places, and attending community events.

2. What do you love most about living in Otsego County?

The thing I love most about Otsego County is how resilient our community has proven to be. The determination and forward thinking of community agencies and members to continuously take action to improve our community for all its members is unique and something to be valued.

3. When you think about the future, what are your hopes for our community?

I hope that Otsego County continues to build and strengthen our existing community by proving access to resources, support, and connections, without judgement, so that no one feels alone or unable to meet their or their family’s basic needs.

4. What inspired you to volunteer with OCF, and what are you most excited about in your role?

I was lucky enough to become involved with OCF unintentionally when a former co-worker requested I consider joining. Since joining, I have consistently enjoyed serving on the Grant Committee. I enjoy reviewing grant requests and hearing all the ingenuity, needs, resources, and services being requested and/or offered to our community, and I learn so much from these requests about the community. More so, seeing the ways grants positively impact our community is my motivation for continued volunteering.

5. Bonus question (just for fun & Optional): What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

I love the quote/advice of “Do it messy, do it scared, do it imperfect, do it anyway”.
